Workshop - Suicide Prevention Skills
This day-long workshop aims to equip participants with the skills to assess suicide risk and to implement brief evidence-based interventions. Training is based on current best practice principles. Key topics include:
· Current information and scope of the problem of suicide in New Zealand
· Depression and suicide risk screening tools
· Suicide risk assessment
· Risk mitigation and brief suicide prevention interventions
· Stress and self-care for those who work in the helping professions
Workshop notes, and copies of tools and resources will be provided.
A certificate of attendance will be provided for professional development portfolios.
Workshop facilitator: Dr Annette Beautrais
Dr Beautrais has a broad background in health and mental health research with specific expertise and experience in suicide research and prevention. She has conducted multiple research studies, working in New Zealand and internationally, and has published extensively about suicide and suicide prevention. She is Senior Advisor, Suicide Prevention, Health NZ, Te Wai Pounamu, and Suicide Prevention/Postvention Co-ordinator for Health NZ South Canterbury. In addition, she provides community and professional training in suicide prevention throughout New Zealand.
